Hey Everyone

Hope your Fridays are going well. Mine was alright. Nothing bad happened at least lol. I taught 2 lessons then helped the kids paint /draw giant posters for our product Showcase that we are having on monday in the hall! Here are some pics of how they turned out (The fishbowl one i painted the background on because they didnt have time to do it but they did all of the rest) :

Save Water: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=34922725&l=2fc656164b&id=119100065

Fishbowl before background: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=34922726&l=754c4f083c&id=119100065

Fishbowl After background: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=34922727&l=d5c3959205&id=119100065

As for the rest of my day I decided to skip out on going to interschool sport to stay behind and mark their products and brochures (their final project for my SOSE unit). Which I did until 330 ish when Sandy got back, and after getting all excited and happy that i painted the background -she thought she would have to do it - she bought me a beer so i went down and friday drinks with the teachers before heading here. Good beer too XXXX mmMMmmm ..... [if your wondering, its common here to have drinks with all your work mates on a friday. Since we are all at school we all go have them in the deputys office -awesome!]

----------------------------------

Out of the mouths of my students :

I forgot to mention this in my post yesterday - and some of you might have seen it on my status on facebook - one of my students, Robert, asked me why Mrs Lewis got a full time teacher aide? So i explained to him that Im not a teachers aide and that im a student teacher which means im learning how to be a teacher from mrs lewis and then she marks me. To which he replied "I think you'll make a good teacher when you go back to canada". How cute is that?!

----------------------------------

Other happenings in the classroom:

I taught the kids about Diamante poems this week and on the very last slide i put a photo of a note pad and pencil and then i used the handwriting font to write "Ms Denman is awesome" in small font. Then as i went through the slides i  let the kids find it themselves ..heres how it went down in the classroom.

Me: Kay now i want you all to try it out here is the format again in case you need it. *switches slide*

Josh: *reading out* Ms Denman is awesome

Me: AW JOSH! thats so nice of you to say!!!

Josh: *looks at me ...then smiles* your welcome.

Maddy: How did you get it to say that?

Me: I didnt, it actually came like that...See, im so awesome even the computer knows it !

BAHAH, I love that i can do random stuff like that with the older kids. The younger ones just dont get it without me having to explain it.

----------------------------------

Music:

So i was youtube-ing music videos and i found this girl named Rissi Palmer. Im pretty sure shes the only black girl to ever sing country music but she puts her own R&B spin on the country song. I love it!!! Here are my fav two songs (so far) by her:

Country Girl: song about its not where your from but how your raised that makes you country. Song--> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nr4ab0Ra1Xs&feature=related Lyrics--> http://www.cowboylyrics.com/lyrics/palmer-rissi/country-girl-23587.html

Mr. Ooh La La: This one makes me think of you Mr Nate. Its a song about how great her man is Song --> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N5_8mPmOgMo  Lyrics--> http://www.cowboylyrics.com/lyrics/palmer-rissi/mr-ooh-la-la-23590.html

This song here isnt from her but i found it and it made me laugh mainly cuz it makes many references to Kenny Chesney's Butt LOL... Its a song about what makes up the perfect man.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yFRHNfraDJ0&feature=channel

----------------------------------

On a shitty note I left my camera at school today (SAD DAYS) which means I wont be able to take any photos this weekend...and of course just because i have no camera a bunch of cool stuff will hapen this weekend like another turkey walking down the stairs! grrr ...oh well such is my life.

----------------------------------

11 DAYS!!!!

Are you excited?!!?!? I sure as hell am!!! Ive started planning out Canada Day celebrations (aka I havnt seen you in an entire year, and we have a reason and a day off  so lets hang out !!) And of course SUPER excited to see Mom and Dad again and Mr Nathan <3 I miss you super much going from seeing you every single day to not at all. Booo

----------------------------------

So I called Sophia last night (my landlord) and talked to her about extending my lease for a week so that im not homeless for 4 days before my flight. And she said its all good (not in those words of course cuz she doesnt speak english very well but you get the point). So i emailed Moe (house manager of sorts)  today and made  sure he knew also that I wasnt leaving right on the 24th. He then called me back and said that Sophia failed to mention that shes leaving the country soon so if I want my bond back it needs to be done TOMORROW. Like wtf youd think she would mention that to me. Grrrrrrrrr...*Grumble**insert bad word here**Grumble*

----------------------------------

Well thats it for now my friends as i have (finally) run out of things to say. --You cant really  blame me for talking/typing this much as my only real social interaction thats not on a professional level is with 9/10 yr olds. Which isnt very stimulating, although most of the time turns out quite amusing lol.

So Im excited to see those once they come out. After school I stayed for a workshop on identifing speech and language disabilities -- mainly a workshop for teachers to be able to identify when and if a child need to be reffered to a speech therapist for testing. Its actually kinda cool and def good information to know. Other then that nothing really happened on wednesday.

Today went by really fast also as BTN took up our whole morning and Buddies/Smart Moves the whole afternoon WOOT ! Easy day :) The students did hand in their Water Sustainability Projects today but i only got to marking 2 of them. They all look really good tho and i cant wait to take a closer look tomorrow at them.

In the news:

In other random but horrible news: A 60 yr old man decided to light him self on fire. No one really knows why... http://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/queensland/man-sets-himself-alight-outside-brisbane-court-20100607-xpnt.html

and lastly because it made me mad: OMFG they're kids!! Piss off and leave them be.  http://news.brisbanetimes.com.au/breaking-news-world/sex-education-for-5yearolds-uk-expert-20100617-yifs.html

Also, for the first time since hearing about it I was finally able to check out the Toy Story 3 preview..and man it looks AWESOME! woot! def gunna have to see it when Im home. Cant wait! I saw a bumper sticker that said "Watch out little kid ..ive waited 11 yrs for this movie" and i totally agree!!

Well thats it for now.

12 days!

G'Day :)

Today went well. I had planning session all morning (all the 7/6 teachers are pulled from their classroom so that they can plan the next unit for term 3) So that went well :) Then right after we got back at 12 the students had P.E. until break so it gave me more free time (YAY) in which i marked all their poetry. The after last break we did rotation and i taught my small group how to do Diamante poems. Then we did Smart Moves till the bell. Sadly i had to stay for a staff meeting after school that went till 4 (BOOOO).

As for tomorrow, its picture day at Ithaca Creek so we have staff photos at 830 am, then the individual photos after first break then the class photo at the end of the day. Lame right?! it screws up my entire daily plan ..grrrrrrr

Other then that not much happening. Im SUPER excited that in exactly two weeks I will be on a plane to Vancouver :D EEEEEEEEeeeeeeeeeeeEEEEEEEEE!

Because its stuck in my head: Iyaz- Replay https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZoG5jJ3E8rg  "..Shorty's like a melody in my head that i cant keep out, got me singing like na na na na everydays like my ipods stuck on replay.."Laughing

Well thats all for now =)

Hey Everyone

Sorry its been so massively long since I’ve last posted.  I’m not sure how many people know but my landlord sold the building and the new landlord has yet to put in the internet. LAME . So I have to come to Uni to do it and during the week I generally have no time after I’m done planning lessons and such to post. Sad days. BUT I’m doing this post that hopefully makes up for it ? Its 5 full pages in Microsoft Word?.....

Prac: Interim Report

Prac has been going INCREDIBLY well for the past five weeks. After the first three weeks I got my interim report and (not that I expected less) but I’ve got all my checkmarks in the good /excellent part of the sheet. YAY ME ! This teacher has been so awesome in helping me out and giving feedback. Its so good to have a second year teacher that knows what its like to just start out. Plus shes been great with giving me all sorts of resources all that are electronic so that I don’t have to fly home any papers. How sweet is that!?

Prac: Parent Teacher Interviews

This past week has been parent teacher interviews and Sandy /the parents have been letting me sit in which is AWESOME because it’s something that’s never covered in school and isn’t something you get practise with.  Any teacher can tell a parent that their child is fantastic..etc. but how do you tell a parent that their child is failing EVERYTHING. Well I got to see it. It was prob the best learning experience of the entire prac. I learned so much. Yay for having such a great prac teacher.

Prac: Poetry

So for the past 4 weeks I’ve been teaching the students different types of poetry.  As you know, the first week we did Haiku poems. The second week I did limerick poems with them…it ended up going pretty crappy. A lot of them just couldn’t get the form of a limerick even with tons of help. Next we did colour poems (where you use similies and metaphors and the 6 senses to describe a colour). These went SO well and I got some really creative ones out of it. Last week was probably my favourite type so far. We did “If I rules the World” poems. Where the first line had to be “If I ruled the world,” and the rhyme scheme is abcb. They needed 2 verses (so 8 lines) then add on a 9th line that said “If only I ruled the world”. They were so creative and awesome! Here is one of each type (Limerick, Colour , If I ruled the world) of poem. If you want to read more / see their final decorated good copy I have them – well my favourite ones - as a pdf file and can email them to you…just ask!

Ellas Colour Poem :

Green

Green makes me feel peaceful

Green feels like a silk scarf

Green sounds like water running down a lonely creek

Green looks like the world growing more knowledge

Green feels like furry moss slowly growing on the rocks

Green sounds like birds singing in the morning

Green tastes like juicy grapes dripping down my throat

Green looks like the trees blowing in the wind

Green smells like freshly cut grass

Green tastes like a green apple with a crunch

Green smells like a bitter-sweet smell

Green makes me feel calm

Lochlan’s Limerick Poem

There once was a man called Fred

Who forgot to take his meds

So he went on a spree

And ate a key

Now he is confined to his bed

Buddy’s “If I Ruled the World” Poem :

Budalopalis

If I ruled the world

I would be real happy

I would watch a lot of movies

But nothing to sappy

Everyone would say Woohoo

Because their king is so cool

But if anyone dissed me I would

Chuck them in a pool!

If only I ruled the world

And because this was my favourite poem done in the whole time I was there: Gabriels “If I ruled the world” Poem:

Principality of Gabriel Land

If I ruled the world

Kids would have rights.

Money would be printed more

And there would be less fights.

The Mona-Lisa would have a moustache

And pizza would be free

Spelling wouldn’t matter

It would be very happy

If only I ruled the world.

All of their poems were so great that we had 14 of them read theirs out at assembly where they also thanked me for all the hard work I’ve put in to teaching them about poems –which I didn’t tell them to do fyi. It was sweet J

Prac : SOSE

Well my 6 week SOSE unit is going really really well. I’ve only got one more lesson to do (this Friday) and the unit will be finished. My favourite lesson I did last Tuesday and it was kick ass! The kids were so engaged even my teacher wanted to be involved. We were learning about catchments and looking specifically at our local creek. I started with a clear container with water in it that represented the river. Then on the projector we went through a story about a river. Where the river travels through all these different things. As the river went through these situations we emptied out a cup full of whatever it was. For example when we talked about the factories polluting the air that lead to acid rain we dumped into the river the cup full of “acid rain” (aka vinegar) the kids thought it was awesome and partsof it gross. I was on the floor laughing my ass off at them being so disgusted. It was so funny.  As if id actually go get manure and sewage just so that they could do this activity, im dedicated but not THAT muchh ahaa  – in case your wondering the manure was thick mud and the sewage was dark yellow water with Kleenex in it. Word got around though,  and by the next break the whole school heard about us having sewage and manure in our class. Too funny. All in all a great lesson though.

Smart Notebook

So I did a fantastic pd on interactive whiteboards and this awesome program that it uses called Smart notebook. The best part being that you don’t need to use Smart notebook with a whiteboard, it can be used with a data projector or even a desktop computer! Aaaand since the school bought the program it’s legally allowed to be on all the teachers’ laptops and home computers. Because my prac teacher is FANTASTIC she gave me the software and the product key so I always have it !!  YAY. Oh! and another cool thing is that most of the resources that come with the program (over 6000 premade lessons and activities and cool things like dice that roll on screen when u click on em) are Canadian/ American. So ill be able to use it back home :)  I’ve been using this program for all my lessons since I got it and its freakin fantastic.

Sports

As you know there are some massive sports stuff that’s everyone is following here in Aussie. Firstly the World Cup – of course- and how can you not be pumped up about the Socceroos (the aussie team) with commercials like this playing à https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KTWhyAWbrB0&feature=related Wicked eh!? Here’s their theme song too à https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YTxmHZfwHi0&feature=related . – Not sure how many of u watched their first game but they lost hugely lol . But  even though they wont win at least they made the finals which is more then I can say for the Canadian team.

The other major sporting event is State of Origin. This is a rugby tournament between all the state in Australia. The first match was a couple weeks ago QLD vs NSW  (HUGE Rivals) here was the commercial for the match à https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C3P29KBLnzs&feature=related  WOOO Maroons ! Qld ended up winning too :D YAY !  My students almost disowned me for not watching the match lol that’s how serious this is. Sweet eh? Here’s the Queensland commercial that XXXX (beer brand) made up to pump up the fans à https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yqmX3L9sB1A&feature=related

Because you need a song to dance to : Reba’s “why haven’t I heard from you” makes me want to dance. Wanna dance with me? à http://www.cmt.com/videos/misc/429922/why-havent-i-heard-from-you-from-invitation-only.jhtml

Better then the original Videos: K you know that UBER annoying song by Beyonce called “If I were a boy”. Well Reba re-did it and made it slower and country-fied it and it’s no longer annoying. I wish I could download this version. SO much better then the Beyonce version. Check it out à http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20388249,00.html

Because its sweet video: Big and Rich singing “Lost in this moment” A very sweet song about a groom being lost in the moment with his bride. à https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0TbHIhEP53U&feature=channel

Touching video : Amazing Tribute to the American soldiers. Big and Rich tell a soldiers story. FANTASTICLY done. à https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ozpdBvB0hek&playnext_from=TL&videos=zEn8ccrgn6k&feature=recentlik

Cool website to check out/ have a play with:

www.makebeliefcomixs.com  You can create your own comic strips..how cool is that!?

Well that’s all for now. Im probably missing a ton of things but I cant think of them at this exact second. So whatever I miss shall be posted in a new post.

Hey Everyone,

I hope you are all out enjoying your long weekend and not so bored that your inside reading this LOL .

Since I last posted, my week(end) went well. There were massive thunderstorms all day Friday which made Inter School Sport cancelled and gave us an extra three hours in the classroom to catch up on the organizing and extra lessons the students needed. Friday I also managed to type up all their Haiku poems and hang em up on the walls for them to read and share and get all my marking done (WOOT!) . Saturday consisted of me sleeping after spending 22 hours awake on Friday lol. As for today I called home and got to talk to Momma (Mum as the Aussies say) and Daddy and then Nate afterwards.  In total I spent 2 ½ hours on the phone and it still wasn’t enough. I wish I had time to call more often. L sad days. Well at least its only 5 more weeks….

As for the links on the last post… Mom was saying some of the photo links for the kids weren’t working so here is the link to the gallery page and you can click on the album instead à http://www.ithacreess.eq.edu.au/home/slewi143/gallery.html

Other then that,  I saw a Turkey walk down some stairs today. It was hilarious. It then crosses the road…why im not sure…im guessing for the same reasons as the chicken did.

Oh and I found two AMAZING quotes today that are added to my Words to live by:

We cannot change the cards were dealt; Just how we play the hand

And

The day the child learns that all adults are imperfect, he becomes an adolescent; the day he forgives them, he becomes an adult; the day he forgives himself, he becomes wise

Well that’s all for today =) Have a great week peoples!

Ps Here are some the kids Haiku poems (my favs at least)

I did not like it                                               Oh no it spiked me!

By Joe                                                             By Helena

And lastly I just left them write about what they wish…. Here are a few of my favs

Hey Everyone!

Hope you week went well. Mine's been uber busy but really good.

On Tuesday I ended up teaching huge lessons all darn day.  I started my Water sustainability Unit first with the kids. That proved to be interesting lol The first question I asked was where I can find water everyday. I ended up getting a variety of answers, my favourite being Josephs (“Well Ms Denman, meteorites have ice on them so we can get water there” LOL ) The next question I asked is what do we use water for everyday. This question also got me a variety of answers here’s how it went.

Me:  What do we use water for everyday?

Owen:  to drink

Sophie: to give water to our pets

Gabriel:  to wash cows.

Me: hmmm Gabriel when was the last time you washed a cow?

Gabriel: um …. Yesterday?

Me: Nice try. I want everyday uses, like using water to take a shower. Things like that

Buddy: I don’t shower everyday.

Matt: I haven’t showered in a week

Girls in the back : EWWWWW

BAHAHHAA I had to fight a laugh on that one… I got a bunch of other answers but none as funny as those.  Next thing I did with them was discuss the difference between fresh water and salt water and explain to them what recycled water and purified recycled water was. Then I did a ‘Water Treasure’ activity with them. I gave them all a piece of paper with a photo of something on there. They then had to connect the object to water and to humans. (example with photo of fish: fish swim in the water, people eat fish) One of the girls, Helena, got an elephant. Her genius answer: “Elephants drink the water with their trunky thingies and um… poachers kill the elephants and eat them” LOL ok then I just said to her “a simple ‘Elephants drink the water, people go to the zoo to see and feed the elephants’ would have sufficed”.  Well they def keep me on my toes that’s for sure. Also on Tuesday I did some more graphing work ‘cause I noticed in their work that they needed to work more on interpreting line graphs so we did a lesson on that. And I did a lesson on Haiku poems. I’m super proud of their Haiku poems they are turning out so freaking awesome. I’ll post some of their creations this weekend when I make a poster of them.

As for Wednesday the whole morning I was off with the year 6’s to The Gap State High School Experience – which is where they take all the yr 6s and invite them to attend 3 classes so they can learn what to expect when they get to high school. In a way they are also recruiting as they want these kids to choose their high school. They don’t do it with the yr 7s because they figure they’ve already decided where they are going. Besides the fact that the school was way more high tech and had access to a ton of cool stuff, it’s exactly like the high schools in Canada. The kids really enjoyed it though. My group (the other 2 class’ 6s) first went to a shop class and made these really annoying toys that they loved, then went to science where they learned about light and did some experiments and lastly went to P.E. The other group from our school (my classes gr 6s) went to math where they played math board games, then went to P.E. then to a graphic design class where they were doing 3-d creations (like in movies or TV when they are creating things like a car and it’s the green lines on the black background) exactly like that only they did it with a yo-yo, wine glass and spinning top. It was so interesting.

As for today, Sandy took a day off so I was solo with the supply teacher. It was really good actually because I got to deal with all the problems and disputes, pretty much anything they normally would have gone to Sandy for. We did another maths lesson and some English writing and then had buddies then watched BTN.  – BTN (Behind the News) is this FANTASTIC program that’s online for Aussie students that takes news topics and breaks it down for them into words they can understand. Each week they watch an episode and then do a poster about one of the news stories. If you want to check it out go here -> http://www.abc.net.au/btn/video.html  Episode 13 is this weeks (I think its 13… it’s the one on top) It goes for about 30 mins and the kids like it.

Speaking of the kids, Sandy had them all sign photo releases so she could post their photos online. Here they are working together during class http://www.ithacreess.eq.edu.au/home/slewi143/student%20learning.pdf  and here is our class and the class across the hall when (after discussing the winter Olympics in Feb.) Sandy brought in her Olympic medals, softball Team Australia outfits , flags and signed shoes from all the athletes on her team. http://www.ithacreess.eq.edu.au/home/slewi143/Olympic1.pdf

In other news, when I was looking for info about the local creek here I found one page of the site devoted to my old landlord Terry. Here it is à http://www.saveourwaterwaysnow.com.au/01_cms/details.asp?ID=2198

Also I heard it though the grapevine (aka some other roommates) that the place I’m staying now was sold to a new owner. When I talked to the other 3 roommates I found out that I’m the only one with an actual signed lease for this place. The other three are only here with verbal contracts. So if the new owner decides to he/she can kick em out.  The next few weeks should be interesting. In addition, we got a new roommate – he moved into Gabby’s old room. His name is Maxime and he’s originally from France but has been living in a downstairs unit with his friend. When his friend went back to France he moved up here with us… and he is my new favourite roommate. He’s clean, super nice, and best of all quiet. I barely even notice when he’s home. AND his girlfriend is very nice and not annoying which is more then I can say about the other guys in my house lol.

Well I think that’s all for now… except YAY for tomorrow being Friday!!

Hola!

Today was a good day for me so I thought I'd make a post. Nothing spectacular happened today really, it was just a good day for the simple reason that nothing went wrong.

In the morning I did a poetry lesson with the students - looking at both traditional and non-traditional Haiku Poems. The kids had a blast reading the non-traditional haiku poems i made and trying to figure out what books they refer too.

After this they worked on their graphing workbooks then had P.E. then break. After their first break the guest speakers i organized to come in came. They are from Green Heart Brisbane - an campaign for making Brisbane a "Green" city. They came and talked with the kids about why sustainability is important etc. The kids seem to enjoy it (altho it could be because the kids got I <3 BNE stickers and mini buttons - not gonna lie the mini buttons were my fav part LOL) and it made a fantastic kick off lesson to my Water Sustainability Unit. After the lesson they had LOTE (Language other than english -- they learn German at this school) till after the break. While they did this I worked with Zane on some basic Maths. Then they changed desks and jobs on the job chart then started their title pages for the unit.

As for tomorrow im teaching 3 lessons. Another graphing one about double column graphs. One on how to write haiku poems and then a massive first lesson for my unit about how we use water everyday. Hopefully it all goes over well ....and hope even more that my cord is there when i get home...

Well im off to go home and mark the rest of the Graphing Tests . (woot?) LOL

Hey Everyone

Hope your week went well, mine was super busy. I had my first full week of prac which also happened to fall on the same week as the Naplan testing (the national testing) which meant I was in charge of the yr 6s while the sevens did the testing. I had to take 21 of them down to the hall to do work for the three days. It actually went really well so i was happy with it.

On friday all of us Canadian ladies decided to have a girls night and get all dressed up to go clubbing downtown. We met at Kristens at 6 ish then had pizza and cookies while we had Daquris (Amazing Amazing Daquris) till about midnight then we left and headed to Fridays. We wernt sure which line up to be at so we chose the smaller one which turned out to be the guest entrance but the bouncer let us in anyways - i didnt find out till later but he didnt make us pay the $5 cover ethier! WOO!- where we danced until about 3 when we decided we were hungry. One of the girls - Amy- was way to wasted and left so the other 4 of us went to Hungry Jacks (aussie version of Burger King) mmmMmmm i love french fries when im wasted lol =P All in all a fantastic night with crazy photos. (which when Holly posts them i will link it to you too)

As for this week I start my SOSE unit on water sustainability which should be fun. We have alot planned so hopefully ill get it all done in the 6 weeks im there.
